WWW Wednesdays (5 Jul ’23)! What are you reading this week?

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. It’s open for anyone to join in and is a great way to share what you’ve been reading!

Current Reads

On my Kindle I’m reading The Villa by Ruth Kelly, which is really intriguing so far and I’m keen to read more. I’m also reading my hardback copy of Friendaholic by Elizabeth Day, which is such an interesting look at friendships and how we approach them.

Recent Reads

This week I’ve finished reading four books! The first was Season of the Witch by Cathi Unsworth and I loved this one, it was such a good read. I’ve now been listening to lots of Siouxsie and the Banshees and am enjoying their records all the more for reading this book about the Goth scene. Then I listened to the audiobook of Peter Swanson’s The Kind Worth Saving and I found it hard to switch it off, I think I pretty much listened to it all in one day! Next I finished reading Clare Macintosh’s The Last Party and found this to be such a good read, I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Finally I bought and read Heatwave by Victor Jestin. This is a short book but it really packs a punch and it feels like one that will really stay with me. It was disturbing and engaging!

What I Might Read Next

I’m still enjoying mood reading but I would like to read more of my 20 Books of Summer list (with some possible swaps!) so I think this week I’m looking at Apples Never Fall by Lianne Moriarty (not on the list but it is a paperback so would count for my plan to read twenty physical books. I’m also thinking of picking up Boy Friends by Michael Pedersen, which I think will be an emotional read but I’d like to get to it soon. On my Kindle I’m drawn to Alex Finlay’s The Night Shift so might start that one too.

What are you reading at the moment? I’d love to know 🙂

  1. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on Friendaholic – I was quite ambivalent about it! Well, not ambivalent as such … anyway will discuss when you’ve read it! I’ve finished Alex Haley’s Queen and am part way through Gina Yashere’s autobiography and my next 20Books book, Kit de Waal’s My Name is Leon, plus reading along with husband on Richard Osman’s The Bullet that Missed. After Gina I will do a little Japanese novella I won on NetGalley and after Leon it’s Lenny Henry’s bio (funnily enough, as he features in Gina’s book!).

    • I’ve finished Friendaholic now and I found it a bit of a chore to get through at times. I did connect with the chapter on friendships and infertility but the rest of it got on my nerves a lot. I’d love to know what your thoughts were. I hope you enjoy the Richard Osman novel – I really like his books, they feel like such cosy escapism.

      • Sorry, forgot to come and answer this. I found it so intrusive and really worried about the people she wrote about as you could identify all of them and I know one of them! And then the poor woman who was her neighbour who she can’t have got consent from. I actually found the infertility bit really jarring, myself, as it felt to me like she was implying all people felt like she did – I can’t have children but I honestly don’t get upset when other people fall pregnant and I have enough time with them assuming I will without her seeming to confirm it. So that didn’t work well for me though it’s good to be honest and open about it, for sure.

Loved the Osman, both of us did, very poignant though. Now to wait for Matthew to have another Audible subscription and me to find the paperback cheap so we can read the next one a year after it comes out!
