Our RSD17 haul
It’s been a week of ups and downs this week! The ups were fab… my husband and I went record shopping on Record Store Day last Saturday and that was a lot of fun. It meant getting up at stupid o’clock to go wait in a queue in the freezing cold but that’s all part of it. The staff at the shop we went to were lovely – they handed out cups of tea and bacon rolls for anyone who wanted them, and they were so accommodating of me in my wheelchair when it became apparent that I wouldn’t be able to get into the shop easily. We had a list of a few records that we really wanted to get and we were lucky to get all but two of them. We’ve since managed to get the final two online yesterday morning when all the remaining records were allowed to be put online by the record shops.
Unfortunately, it was overly ambitious for me to cope with being out so long in the cold and when we got home I had an horrendous fall. I managed to bruise all of my left side and banged my head quite badly. It really shook me up. I am prone to falling with my condition as my balance is off and I only have sensation in one leg (I’m paralysed down my right side) but this was the worst fall I’ve had in a while. Thankfully I’m starting to feel better now but it has affected me for most of this week.
Due to feeling so rough I’ve been taking it easy and have enjoyed relaxing with some audio books – they make up most of my reading for this week.
This week I’ve finished reading six books:
The Wild Air by Rebecca Mascull
This is such a wonderful novel, I absolutely loved it. I’m actually on the blog tour today so you can read my review here if you’d like to.
Foxlowe by Eleanor Wasserberg
This is one of my audio books for this week and I really enjoyed listening to it. I’d heard a lot of mixed things about the novel but I found it engaging and it had me hooked all the way through. I listened to it over three sittings and when I wasn’t listening I was thinking about it.
The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald
I’ve had this book on my TBR for a while now so when I found it on my audio subscription this week I decided to listen to it. I’m annoyed with myself for not reading this before now as it was brilliant. I already want to read it again as it feels like it’s one of those short novels that is packed with so much subtle detail.
Titanic Lives by Richard Davenport-Hines
I really enjoyed this book, it was fascinating to find out more about the people who were involved with Titanic – from the designers to the engineers to the passengers. I knew a lot of the stories told in this book but some of it was new to me so it was nice to find out some things I didn’t know before.
He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly
I have to admit that I struggled to get into this book but once I did get into it I couldn’t put it down. I hope to get my review written and posted soon but I definitely recommend it.
Luuurve is a Many Trousered Thing by Louise Rennison
I picked this up after my fall the other day and it was a perfect read for that moment in time. I’m way older than the target audience for this book but I still found it amusing. Louise Rennison really was such a great writer.
This week I’ve blogged five times:
Sunday: Weekly Wrap-Up
Monday: Interview with Kay Langdale for The Comfort of Others blog tour
Wednesday: WWW Wednesday
Thursday: Review of See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt
Saturday: Stacking the Shelves
This is what I’m currently reading:
Block 46 by Johana Gustawsson
I’m finding this book hard to put down, it grabbed me early on and I’m begrudging the time when real life stops me from reading more. I’ll be reviewing this book on Wednesday for the blog tour so look out for my review then.
Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton
I can barely put into words how much I’m enjoying this book. If it wasn’t for me having such a bad week and struggling to hold a book to read I’d having finished this in a couple of sittings. I really hope I can get back to this very soon.
The Comfort of Others by Kay Langdale
This is another book that I’ve had to leave to one side this week due to not being able to hold a print book very well. I was adoring it though and can’t wait to get back to it.
How to Survive a Plague by David France
This is a really moving and powerful read that stays in your head every time you put it down. It’s interesting and well-written and I’m looking forward to reading more of it this week.

I can’t remember the last time I was in a record shop, but I loved going to them! So sorry you took a fall, but I’m glad you’re feeling better.
The Bookshop sounds really tempting. Thanks for sharing, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
Thank you, I’m getting there.
My husband is a record fanatic and we both love music – there is something special about putting a record on. Our house is getting very full of his records and my books though…
The Bookshop was brilliant, it’s already on my pile of books I want to re-read. I highly recommend it.
Sorry about your fall and I hope you recover quickly – but well done on the records!
Thank you, I’m recovering now – just feeling very shaken by it.
Thanks, we got some really gorgeous records and now it’s lovely to have new vinyl to listen to.
Hope that bruising is going down quickly x
Thank you. I’m slowly recovering – just left feeling very shaken by it. xx
I bet – take it easy x
Oh, that fall sounds horrible! I hope you’re feeling better now! Glad you got those records, though. The visit sounds like fun. And you’ve got a nice lot of books you’ve been reading, too. The Kelly and the Davenport-Hines sound especially appealing.
Thank you, I’m much better than I was – just feeling very shaken by it.
Erin Kelly’s book is really thought-provoking and interesting, I recommend it.
I love seeing the number of your tbr, it makes me feel so much better about mine 🙊
And oh gosh, I hope you’re feeling better 😊 x
Haha! Glad it makes you feel better. 😉 Thank you – it’s been a rough week but I’m recovering now. x
Your current reads have me curious. I am sorry that such a wonderful day resulted in your fall. I hope you aren’t too sore, although it’s the perfect excuse to curl up and read!
Thank you. x
Dang that record store sounds good. But wait, why did you have to wait in the cold and get up early to go to it? Or is it like a special event?
Oh my gosh 😦 that sounds like a really tough fall, last time you said you didn’t go into that much detail. Jesus.. I hope you’re feeling better 😦 truly sucks…
Oh hey! Your TBR has gone down since last week! Awesome 😀 I actually only got 5 books IN THE ENTIRETY OF APRIL. Can you believe how proud of myself I am 😀 two or three months before it was 17 books a month! I’m rocking it, oh yeah.
Here’s my wrap up post:
http://avalinahsbooks.space/book-haul-3/
It was a special event – Record Store Day where independent record shops get in limited editions and special editions of certain records. You have to get there early if there’s stuff you don’t want to miss out on. It happens once a year 🙂
Wow, only five books in April – that’s impressive. I need some of your willpower. I was pleased my TBR went down this week but I think it may go back up this week as I already bought a couple of books. Oops!
I’ll go read your post now 🙂
Your TBR actually went down quite a lot! And I guess my “willpower” was just for April? It’s the second of May, and I’ve already bought 3 books and gone on a requesting spree. Normally they don’t even approve me. But I’ve been approved on like 4 books already 😀 so… yep. May will be fun 😀
Haha! I’m doing better than you in the willpower stakes for May so far but I suspect it won’t last as there is a kindle sale on in the UK at the moment and some of my wishlist books are on offer. I’m trying to resist but I know I won’t be able to hold out for long! Ah well! 😉
Glad you had a good time visiting the record store, my daughter now enjoys purchasing records and it great that a lot the alternative music she listens to is available. I’m so sorry to hear about your fall, I hope you’re feeling better. Dead Woman Walking sounds very interesting. Enjoy your reads this week.
Thank you 🙂 I love that records are making a comeback – it’s great that the music your daughter listens to is on vinyl.
Thanks, I’m recovering from the fall now but it was awful at the time.
Dead Woman Walking is so good, I recommend it.
So sorry to hear about your fall – my daughter loves collecting records and I know that many of the shops she frequents are small, overcrowded and twisty places… I can guess that it must be difficult to get a wheelchair in there. Hope you are able to use arnica cream for those bruises – it’s brilliant at preventing bruising and taking away the pain. The books, as ever, are fascinating to see – there was an excellent interview on Woman’s Hour this week with Erin Kelly about He Said/She Said. Have a better week, Hayley:).
Thank you, I’m recovering well now – just left feeling shaken by it. I’ll make sure I have arnica cream in for the future, thanks for recommending it. Yes the independent record shops tend to be small shops that aren’t always easily accessible, but I don’t mind too much when the staff are helpful. I will try and find the Erin Kelly interview on catch-up, thanks for telling me about it. Hope you’re having a better week too. x
Thank you Hayley. A bit up and down to be truthful.
Oh no. That sounds like a terrible fall. I do hope you feel better soon and the bruising isn’t too painful. I still have tons of records from years ago and finally found a new turntable I like so I can listen to them. A great bunch of new books this week for you. Many are calling to me. LOL
My Sunday Post
Thank you, it was very painful for a few days but I’m recovering now. How fab to still have your old records – I hope you have fun listening to them on your new turntable. I got rid of all my records a long time ago, as did my husband, but we’re slowly building up a collection of our favourites again. There’s something so lovely about listening to a record, isn’t there? 🙂

Sending you healing hugs after your fall, that doesn’t sound good at all. I’m so glad you got out though and hopefully you will be feeling a bit better and will be able to get out again soon. Sending lots of love. 💜💜
Thank you, I appreciate that. Yeah it was an awful fall, and it’s so potentially dangerous for me to have a bad fall like that so I’m just thankful that I haven’t done any major harm to myself. x
Oh, Hayley, that fall sounds awful! I hope you are resting up and not overdoing it too soon. I hope you enjoy your new records!
Thank you. I’ve been taking it easier since my fall and am on the mend now. I fall quite a lot due to my condition but this was the worst fall I’ve had in a while so it really left me shaken. I’ve been enjoying reading good books and listening to our new records though, which has been nice. x

So sorry to hear about your fall and hope you’re recovering nicely by now. I’ve been reading very light books as I’ve been a bit under the weather myself, so I’ve got rid of a lot of my Book Pile if not my actual TBR. Well done for the culling – how did you decide what to cull?
Thank you, I’m about recovered now but it has left me feeling quite shaken. Falls are par for the course with my condition but this one was worse than normal. I’m sorry you’ve been under the weather, I hope you’re feeling better soon. I go through my books and cull the ones that no longer appeal to me – some of my TBR books have been on my shelves for years so in a lot of cases it’s because my reading tastes have changed.
Ah, that makes sense. My oldest physical TBR book is just from last October, so not too many changes in between. I am OK, recovering from medical treatment. Just t i r e d all the time at the moment!
My TBR goes back years… I’m working on reading some of the books I’ve had the longest this year. I hope your recovery is going well, and that the tiredness begins to ease soon.
